Information about the town
Altafulla forms part of the Costa Dorada yet has its own unique character. A quiet town by nature, it is ideal for families, with services tailored to the needs of increasingly demanding and knowledgeable tourists who understand how to appreciate the cultural, scenic, gastronomic and sporting attractions of tourist destinations.
Altafulla is a well-maintained town that takes care of its protected surroundings and enjoys a warm, mild climate. The town is like an island between the conurbations of Barcelona and Tarragona and the mass tourism of the Costa Dorada. It combines the proximity of a host of leisure options just a few minutes away with the tranquillity of the ideal place to live, work, visit and enjoy. Culture, high-quality services, a beautiful natural setting and a hospitable people are all highlights of a tourist destination that complement Altafulla’s main attractions: the people, the beach and the sun.
The short distances to fascinating cities and sights such as Barcelona, the Roman remains in Tarragona, the Costa Dorada, Port Aventura theme park, the Ebro Delta, the works of Gaudí and Picasso, the Cistercian Monastery route, gastronomic itineraries and the fine wines and cavas of the Priorat, Penedes, Terra Alta and Baix Gaià regions all combine to make Altafulla the starting and finishing point of a whole variety of tours for getting a greater insight into this corner of Catalonia. In 1998, the town was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Catalan government, primarily thanks to the Vila Closa (the ancient walled town) and its ravals, or suburbs. Two years later, in 2000, UNESCO declared the Roman villa of Els Munts a World Heritage Site.
